CROWELL,JACK W., AND ELVIN E. SMITH. Oxygen de&it and irreversible hemorrhagic shock. Am. J. Physiol. 206 (2) : 3 I 3-3 I 6. rg64.A device was constructed to record continually the oxygen conSumption of a dog and to summate as the oxygen deficit the difference between normal oxygen use and oxygen use during hypotension. Dogs were subjected to hypotension of 30 mm Hg and various oxygen deficits were allowed to accumulate. It was found that oxygen deficits of IOO mg/kg or less were not lethal. Oxygen deficits of 120 ml/kg produced an LD50, and oxygen deficits of 140 ml/kg or greater were invariably fatal. Digitalization was beneficial to the dogs. Dibenzylene and conditioning of the animals to periods of hypotension proved to be of no value when the animals were subjected to a definite oxygen deficit equal to that in control animals. Neither epinephrine nor norepinephrjne changed the mortality rate for a given oxygen deficit.

The anesthetized dog when submitted to a prolonged period of drastic hypotension, achieved by controlled bleeding, enters into a state of irreversible shock. The standard procedure developed in this laboratory for producing this state (1) ent!ails lowering the arterial blood pressure by rapid bleeding to 50 mm. of Hg and sustaining it at this level for 90 minutes; it is then reduced to 30 mm. o...
متن کاملOxygen deficit and H2S in hemorrhagic shock in rats
INTRODUCTION Hemorrhagic shock induced O2 deficit triggers inflammation and multiple organ failure (MOF). Endogenous H2S has been proposed to be involved in MOF since plasma H2S concentration appears to increase in various types of shocks and to predict mortality. We tested the hypothesis that H2S increases during hemorrhagic shock associated with O2 deficit, and that enhancing H2S oxidation by...
متن کاملBench-to-bedside review: Oxygen debt and its metabolic correlates as quantifiers of the severity of hemorrhagic and post-traumatic shock
Evidence is increasing that oxygen debt and its metabolic correlates are important quantifiers of the severity of hemorrhagic and post-traumatic shock and and may serve as useful guides in the treatment of these conditions. The aim of this review is to demonstrate the similarity between experimental oxygen debt in animals and human hemorrhage/post-traumatic conditions, and to examine metabolic ...
